Sleepers of 2000 Generation
SZYMON JANCZAK – Not everyone still remembers highly successful FIBA U16 European Championship for Polish forward in Radom more than two years ago. While Olek Balcerowski missed the competition because of stress fracture, Janczak was main figure of the team and caught attention even of NBA scout. Since then he totally disappeared from international scene and missed last U18 Euros because of injury. Comfort zone is a beautiful place but most of the cases nothing grows there. Seems like Janczak missed right moment to leave. Basically after current season he will be 19 year old who has played just a single season on Polish 3rd tier (Hensfort used to participate only in 4th and youth leagues in one of the worst regions for basketball in the country). Even European Youth Basketball League U20 is nothing major that could compensate for this. He should not struggle to become solid pro in Poland in few years but actually college road could make sense as a direct jump from overprotective environment to pro competition can harm him. Anyway stretch fours at 6’10 who are as fluid as players 5 inches smaller don’t grow on threes. Toughness was always area to improve and despite very clean and good looking mechanics 3pt shooting percentages were not great lately.

Recap: Polish U18 Championships
Szymon Janczak – He was kind of sensation at last year FIBA U16 European Championships where even NBA scouts put his name in their notebooks. He also excels this season as he continues to make progress this season. Szymon possess tremendous agility, runs the floor really well and improved driving ability. Shooting skills are very intriguing as well for someone that size. His team didn’t have a single player born in 1999 but next year will definitely be the main contender.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • very good conditioning. Perfect combination of size and mobility
  • quick leaper. Can finish above the rim
  • ability to stretch the floor with three point range. Can occasionally shoot off screen too. Smooth release, sets feet quickly
  • great quickness for a player his size. Doesn’t miss a chance to score in transition
  • solid pump fake. Has a long strides and may become good straight line driver if manage to stand the contact better. Makes stop and pop jumpers
  • active and quick hands. Deflects a lot of passes
  • lacks strength in upper body. A bit narrow shoulders, gets push around in the paint. Pretty good touch on non dunk attempts but only in right hand
  • too soft. Uses nothing but length for rebounds. Doesn’t fight much
  • needs to add screening ability. Doesn’t cover enough ground. Not a threat as a pick and pop player which could be his really big asset
  • lack of defensive awareness. Often loses eye contact and doesn’t communicate well during P&R plays. Can really get down on his hips and get proper defensive stance but still doesn’t play to his potential on this end. Gets crossed by guards on switches
OUTLOOK
Szymon is a prospect worth tracking thanks to outstanding motor coordination and very promising shooting skills which can allow him to succeed in modern basketball. He needs to bulk up his base which shouldn’t be a big deal considering he is a son of former shot putter. As for now understanding of the game and toughness are his biggest areas to improve.
