RANKINGS UPDATE
Alen Smailagic got promoted a lot in 2000 ranking. He is a proof that situation is almost everything while evaluating and also while reaching full potential. If he played at the moment in Serbian KLS for let’s say Zemun and averaged +/- 15ppg probably no one would considering drafting him. However given solid offensive role in G League system and being quite reliable helped his stock drastically. He may not be perfect for today NBA especially on defensive end but is definitely not out of chance to hear his name being called next June if he keeps performing, declares and stays.

Trending player:

ALEN SMAILAGIC – Paradoxically Smailagic can quickly convert from sleeper to someone who has even too much buzz. Prospect who was constantly kept away from the spotlight got lately selected by South Bay Lakers in the G League draft with very high 4th pick and immediately traded to Santa Cruz Warriors. There was a word for a while that he may leave to USA and not necessarily to NCAA. Also for people knowing his environment there is absolutely zero surprise which franchise he ended up in. Alen is the youngest player on the team and first ever 2000 born to participate in NBA development competition. He appeared few times in our Top 30 ranking but last two years he got stuck in Beko Beograd and played for them solely in domestic U19 and 3rd senior tier. Smailagic is a serious prospect who stands somewhere between 6’8-6’9, plays inside & outside and moreover possess good either: ball handling, stroke and athleticism. Europeans who play in G League from let’s call it from their own will without being drafted and assigned there by NBA franchises are still somewhat an experiment. Money wise it maybe makes some sense as in college or homeland he couldn’t make similar or any salary current season. So far so good but we will see about long term perspective of this endeavour. If his career was lead different way since U16, most likely goal which probably is hearing his name in the most important Draft could be more achievable with his tools and talent.

Alen Smailagic (2000, #28) – Smailagić is one of the best Serbian prospects born in 2000. We use term one of the best but this could very well mean simply the best in most of the other nations as Serbia has Pecarski, Koprivica, Petrusev or Dalibor Ilic in this generation. He signed for Dynamic in january, but could skip them for Partizan. 6-8 6-9 forward who plays inside and out. Has good ball handling, can shot and posses above average athleticism. Serious prospect who is currently totally dominant in domestic U19 League!

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • high upside player
  • strong body with a very good frame he has been filling up over the years. Constantly working on his physique, noticeable improvements
  • very good technical abilities for a player of his size. Handles the ball well, can bring the ball up court and penetrate 1 on 1 from the perimeter
  • has pretty solid shooting stroke. Percentage isn’t there yet but he can grow into a good stretch 4 with proper work. He has a good feel for the ball and the release is legit, just needs consistency
  • very good weak side defender at this level, protects the rim with both mere presence and ability to block shots
  • good rebounder
  • makes players around him better. Led Beko to historic results in both U17 and U19 competitions with MVP performances in limited minutes. Does not need huge minutes and a big role to help his team
  • even though he is a motorically sound player, he lacks burst, not an explosive player
  • free throws. Inconsistent release and result. Improved over the year, but had 4 games in which he shot below 40%
  • he gets passive at times and passes the ball in situations his finish would clearly be the better option
  • needs to add advanced finishing moves around the rim, as he will face bigger and faster competition at the next level
  • does not have actual go to post up moves. He is all about using his height and improvisation at this level. Needs to work on that
  • played in a smaller club his entire career. Doesnt need to mean a thing but he still hasnt been role tested. Always been the go to guy
OUTLOOK
Alen is a follow for NBA and European scouts alike. Pretty good combination of a strong body, mobility and technical skills. He could be a factor in both offense and defense in pro ball, with improvement in 1 on 1 defense on mind. Its not exactly a weakness of his, but needs work. All around player with big upside.
