MIKAEL JANTUNEN (6’9, Finland)

In 1997 generation HBA had Markkanen, 1999 Elias Valtonen and 2000 is definitely headlined by Miakel Jantunen. Finnish forward one more time proved himself as a legitimate High Major candidate. While he is not the type of offensive dominator and typically for the guy coming from interior/center background his shot is still not a threat at all, he provides other countless values for the team. 6’9 player has well proportionate frame, good no step jump and is capable of switching pick and roll plays onto guards. He is comfortable handling the ball and sharing it also at full speed which makes him asset in transition offense. He executes advantage with his back to the basket and is very unselfish. Mobility, rebounding instincts and good body control on straight line drives complete his versitality.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • solid height for combo forward and strong base in upper body
  • well coordinated for this height. Able to shift direction during penetration
  • possess exciting and unique combination of size and skill
  • very efficient in transition thanks to length, body control and ability to withstand contact
  • very good handles for someone his size
  • can use his height and strength advantage in the post. Moreover has above average footwork and flair to finish with reverse lay ups
  • has a really good feel for rebounding
  • has even some playmaking skills. Can read the defense and share the ball on the move
  • can turn into impactful multipositional defender. Decent lateral movement
  • versitale but best as mismatch executor. Not very proficient against players with similar physical profile in the post or against good athletes in face up isolations
  • not a threat behind the three point line. Rarely takes any attempts. Huge thing for further development
  • kills his dribble unnecessarily too often
OUTLOOK
Mikael makes constant progress and was able to establish himself as a one of the most intriguing forward among 2000 born players in Europe after breakout FIBA U18 European Championship. Jantunen checks many boxes and provides flexibility in kind of positionless basketball. He is not 7 footer who knock down shoots from all over the court so there is no Lauri Markkanen ceiling but still he is next big thing coming from HBA Marsky program.
