Nemanja Popovic / 6’8, 2001 / Crvena Zvezda MTS Belgrade

Fluid forward had a good tournament overall. Good length, vision and constant effort makes him a valuable asset. Very good rebounder, hustles for loose balls and does not lose focus at anytime throughout the games. He is at his best operating around high-low post. Has good body strength already to compete underneath the rim and finishes well with expanding to the rim. On the high post, he shows exceptional awareness to make nice passes and find his open teammate. Versatile and mobile for his size but it is hard to call him a perimeter player yet. He hit some 3pts and midrange shots but not a constant threat so far. Looks to handle the ball better in this tournament but at least an improvement on his spot up jumpers will add a lot more value to his game.

Recap: Young Guns GBA Invitational
Nemanja Popovic aka. the prospect with the headband. Hard not to like this perfect glue guy candidate. He possess really high basketball IQ. Makes quick short and long distance passes with top notch game reading ability. Numbers of boxes he checks with his size is really intriguing. He is decent rebounder, can handle the ball, do dirty work and rebound. Unfortunately jumper is still work in progress and he is average athlete best case scenario.

  • has long limbs, Runs the court very well

  • good first step. Drives in straight line with solid body control
  • tremendous defender. Slides his feet really well. Has ability to check multiple positions
  • a bit effortful, overly high arching and slow release
  • needs to work on extending his range to the three point line next years
  • just ok athlete. Could be more bouncy
  • not much flaws but also still not polished overall. Needs a lot of work to become all around player he has potential to be
  • can get a bit wild at times
OUTLOOK
Popovic was one of the most positive surprises of FIBA U16s in Montenegro during the summer of 2017. His contribution may not be visible in boxscore but he is elite glue guy who does plenty of small but crucial things and is moreover better offensively than it seems. If he grows slightly and fills out his frame he can possibly defend every position and continue to star in his role on the highest level.
