Recap: Best prospects from Belgrade AdidasNGT
ZORAN PAUNOVIC (2000, 6’7, GUARD, CRVENA ZVEZDA) – Absolutely stunning performance. Paunovic explosiveness was just too much for any defender in Belgrade. When he came to Red Star his attributes were basically limited to athleticism. It is great how much he is building over it skillwise. Moreover the pace of development is really rare for not naturally talented player as he is better every time we watch him. Standing close to 2 meters with shoes, Paunovic is a slasher with more and more notable playmaking skills. He keeps improving his PnR reads and reach helps him with finding passing lanes. His first step, bounce and fearless attitude are really deadly combination. His mid range pull ups can look unorthodox at times because of questionable timing he takes them with or overly high release point but are really reliable. Then as befits Crvena Zvezda player he is tough as nails and plays much above average defense. Stats may be mindblowing but we have to keep in mind low level of competition. For example Amar Gegic who is not very different player than Zoran averaged nearly triple double at Belgrade AdidasNGT two years ago and now is not somewhere on the bottom of NBA scouts shortlist. That’s why I wouldn’t state that Paunovic is NBA prospect. However there is a need for player like him on high level. Energetic slashers with work ethic, projectable stroke, great physical tools who can be secondary ball handlers and are willing to compete with everyone.

Recap: Young Guns GBA Invitational
Zoran Paunovic was clearly best player of the tournament and well deserved MVP. Has always been good athlete for European standards and keeps improving basketball wise as well. When I previously watched him, he played more of the swingman position but here was main ball handler for long stretches. Beside athleticism and toughness he displays nice shoot making skills using his reliable high arching stroke. Playmaking is still work in progress but first step, body control and how it’s coordinated with the dribble looked Nando De Colo-esque at times.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • athleticism. His number one quality by far. Quick and strong at the same time
  • explosive first step. Easily gets to the rim. Vertical player
  • tough player. Does not give out excuses. Hustles and plays hard 24/7
  • very good defender. Usually guards the best opposing perimeter player to a great deal of success
  • high energy player, both on offense and defense. Does not take plays off
  • his game does not depend on high usage style or the ball. He can be very effective and useful of the ball just taking his shots on cuts, spot ups or second chances
  • extremely dangerous as a secondary offensive rebounder. Combination of athleticism and good instincts
  • ball hawk
  • improved his offense a lot. Now he shoots and drives out of ISOs, not just spot ups or cuts
  • likes to take responsibility for the team and get the ball in clutch
  • great teammate
  • offensively still a work in progress. Not a natural
  • lacks basic offensive instincts and understanding of small intricacies of offensive sets
  • tunnel vision
  • one dimensional repertoire of finsihing moves. If he can not dunk the ball or make an easy layup, he does not have a solution
  • goes for acrobatic plays more than he should, usually to no result
  • still a straight line slasher, not much creativity when defense gets in his way
  • streaky shooter. Not a natural in this category. Inconsistent form, depends a lot on his confidence and flow in that particular game.
  • can knock down couple of threes in a row, and can throw bricks just as easily
  • lacks creativity overall
  • gets ahead of himself a lot of times. Technical ability cant cash the check athleticism writes
OUTLOOK
Zoran is one of those guys you always want to have on your team. Low maintenance, high energy, good defense and some offense. His upside is limited due to his offense that is too dependent on physical domination and confidence that builds up on defense. At this level its only a plus, but for pro basketball, he will need to develop a bigger repertoire of moves. All in all, he is not a risky pick to be a pro player and he is definitely worth a follow even from the biggest teams, just know what you can and can not get. Good thing is that he looks like a guy who has the needed work ethic to improve even in later stages of his career.
