PREDRAFT MEASUREMENTS

Albert Schweitzer 2018 Tournament - Top European Prospects
Omar Dieng (PF, Italy)

Italian forward with massive body went with the high tempo flow of the Italian team whole tournament. He wasn’t afraid to take his jumpshots confidently but the conversion rate is was very low (24% from 3s). He made use of his strong body and footwork around the paint. Average ball handler, relies on the guards a lot. Needs to handle the ball better to be more efficient on the perimeter. Was very active on defense but not quick to catch up with athletic opponents.

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • moves surprisingly well regarding his a bit stout body type. Still there is a work to do in this case to achieve the standards of fast paced game
  • good sense of positioning and timing for rebounds
  • sets really solid screens – body covers a lot of ground. Excellent fit for pick and pop plays
  • as polished shooting mechanics as it gets at this age. Combined with very good footwork and ability to hit fade away jumpers which are rarely seen from European players. Also capable of making pull ups.
  • good court vision for position – shares the ball well around the rim
  • active hands on defense, always tries to contest
  • always in motion off the ball. Wants to get involved offensively, fills open spots

  • big bodied, has a lot of baby fat
  • undersized for PF requirments. Also below the rim player. Sometimes goes away from the basket even after offensive rebound
  • lack of ability to defend quicker players. The further from the basket the worse it gets for him
  • difficult translation of his playing style if he doesn’t grow
  • not always focused solely on basketball
OUTLOOK
Omar Dieng  was born to Senegalese father and Italian mother. He moved to Barcelona after 2015/2016 season but didn’t play there as big role as he wished. Generally he has a big talent with advanced skillset especially shooting wise but needs to work a lot on his body and on the role he will most likely take in professional basketball.
