Analysis - 2020 European NBA Draft Picks

Nico Mannion, Golden State Warriors – 48th overall

30 G, 4.1 PTS, 1.5 REB, 2.3 AST, 0.5 STL, 1.0 TOV | 34.2 FG%, 36.7 3P%, 82.1 FT%, 43.9 eFG%

9 G, 19.3 PTS, 3.4 REB, 6.9 AST, 1.8 STL, 3.8 TOV | 40.5 FG%, 36.5 3P%, 77.3 FT%, 49.3 eFG% (in G-League)

Once projected to be a lottery pick, Mannion fell to the second round and ended up signing a two-way deal. He rarely played at the start of the season for a Warriors team competing for a playoff spot and ended up taking part in the G-League bubble. After getting much needed playing time in the G-League, Mannion got more consistent playing time with the Warriors but was not part of the rotation for the play-in tournament. He shot the ball well from beyond the arc in both the NBA and G-League and showed flashes of his playmaking ability which once made him a coveted prospect coming out of high school. Mannion’s outlook for next season is cloudy as his two-way deal will expire at the end of the season, thus making him a free agent. The Warriors are expected to use the little cap space they have to build a competitive supporting cast around Steph Curry. Therefore, Mannion will likely receive a similar contract from the Warriors or catch on with another team.

Nico Mannion (Arizona) : HS phenom Mannion has committed to Arizona therefore rejecting offers from Duke and Villanova. It is highly possible to see him jump right in to the rotation as the team is coming after a somewhat of a tough season, only finishing 8th place in PAC-12 last season. Most of the memories of Nico Mannion comes from the U16 European Championship in Podgorica, as Mannion dominating the floor with impressive shooting and his relentless motor.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • next play mentality. Unsuccessful attempts don’t bother him at all
  • very good athlete. Explosive, gets to the rim, knows how to draw the fouls
  • can do a lot of damage offensively playing off the ball and attacking closeouts
  • displays a compact jumper with decent consistency. Also quick release. Can get into the zone
  • good ball handling combined with quickness give him ability to create shots for himself
  • scorer first but has some vision. Really capable passer especially in transition and drive & kick
  • very speedy but able to control the tempo at the same time. Shows flashes of being good p & r ball handler
  • high IQ. Knows how to use and create advantage. Unselfish but knows when to take over
  • very aggressive overall. As bucket getter, on the defensive end and as a rebounder
  • lacks significant size for position. Doesn’t recover by the length either. It’s probably the only thing that keeps him out of being 5 stars by USA standards but should have some inches left regarding parents height
  • may trust his athleticism too much. Doesn’t finish through contact regularly and tries a lot of this kind of plays
  • much better shooter than finisher. Touch on floaters, runners is not polished yet
OUTLOOK
Nico has great athletic predispositions as his father spent 6 years in NBA before successful career in Italy and mother was a professional volleyball player. He was very close to make final USA U16 roster. His stock continue to rise and it’s still up in the air which country will he play for in older age groups of youth competitions. His bucket getting ability is rare for pass 1st Point Guard. If he grows and remains so hungry to improve, he may spent more seasons in the NBA than Pace Mannion.
