Recap: NBBL/JBBL TOP4
Nelson Weidemann was named MVP of the tournament. He made a lot of powerful drives and played with amazing energy in general (could maybe utilize it better on defensive end). Also Weidemann’s three pointer is becoming serious threat in spot up situations. On the other hand typical Point Guard responsibilities are still not polished and there is not so much progress in this regard. I once heard some Malcolm Delaney comparisons but his real potential seems to be much closer to someone like Maodo Lo.

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • terrific body and athleticism. Slender but muscular legs and perfectly v-shaped upper body that is filled up already
  • quick and strong. Can explode to the rim and make a bullet pass
  • good (but not the most fluid) ball handler who has a tools to deal with pressure easily. Has an ability to find open lanes and teammates. Speeds the game up whenever possible
  • good enough three point shooter to keep the defense honest. Capable of hitting mid range pull ups
  • solid and patient high pick and roll executor
  • really dynamic defender who can press way beyond three point line. Players without his speed are not able to get around him easily. Can guard both backcourt positions with his size and strength. Good hands activity
  • good communicator. Seems to be self motivated and care about winning

  • has ups and downs. Shows that he can be somewhat turnover-prone. Passes on the move at the full speed are not accurate
  • viable option to play at point guard but not really the one by nature. Still learning how to run the team and control the pace of the game
  • drives to the left side of the court seems to be dominant
OUTLOOK
Weidemann’s father comes from Ghana and he grew up in Berlin. His playmaking ability is still a work in progress but you can’t underestimate his mental toughness. He is an example of two-way player with fantastic athleticism and intangibles but he needs to improve understanding of the game to fully embrace his own potential. Doubtful as an NBA prospect but should not be ignored. Comparison: Maodo Lo.
