Albert Schweitzer 2018 Tournament - Top European Prospects
Jonas Mattiseck (PG, Germany)

The unanimous MVP of the tournament, Jonas Mattiseck controlled the tempo in all the games for Germany. He was the leader of the champions and it was an all-around phenomenal showcase of his abilities and mentality. He shot 62.5% from 3s, was second in assists and also the co-scoring leader along with Hendrik Drescher. The most impressive thing we saw from him was his eagerness to take responsibility at breaking points of the games. He scored several clutch baskets in different matches and allowed his team to play well balanced offensive game with his playmaking ability. He got more quicker with the ball which allows him to create separation from his defender and creating appropriate passing angles. Never hesitated to shoot the ball when he found space, has a very good release for a lefty. On the defensive end, he displayed his motor and relentless mindset. German prospect possess notable basketball IQ, he rarely turned the ball over especially against pressure, seemed comfortable and confident. He made other backcourt players with him more efficient especially Obiesie. Still he does not have the tremendous upside to be a superstar but can be a decent guard for Eurocup level teams in the upcoming years.

Recap: Munich Adidas Next Generation Tournament
JONAS MATTISSECK (6’5, Guard, Alba) – Good not great tournament for Jonas. Offensively probably there is a level which he cannot jump over and he won’t become more than ok Beko BBL scorer. His stroke is very fluid looking, he can make misdirection steps while driving to the rim. Besides his size and frame allows him to mix both guard position responsibilities on either end of the floor. We all know how pesky defender he is but we shouldn’t underestimate his tremendous instincts. His ability to press is combined with predicting opponents moves. He had multiple steals which made other promising guards looked extremely naive. Berlin native, team player, brings intangibles to the table. Seems like a perfect long term rotation player of Alba.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • decent legs strength. Seems to be stronger that you would expect in general
  • pesky defender. Really committed to his role on this end of the floor
  • fearless attitude & tenacity
  • good driving ability. Decent quickness. Has some shiftiness. Can kick the ball out well
  • acceptable three point shooter
  • has some potential leadership qualities
  • possess ability to throw different kinds of passes. Also one handed off the dribble
  • strong but a bit narrow frame up top
  • average size and length for position
  • doesn’t try finish his penetrations against longish athletes. Doesn’t look at the rim – easy for defense to get into the passing lanes
  • just good not very good as far as dribble moves and creating own shoots consistently. May struggle to score at senior leve
OUTLOOK
Mattiseck is a Berlin native two way combo guard with tremendous intangibles. He is making very good and surprisingly quick adjustment to the Point Guard position after joining Alba Berlin from the program where he played more as a typical scorer. His defense undoubtedly will translate to the senior level but may no longer be considered elite while facing american guards. That is why he needs to continue working on his PG skills and offensive repertoire to contribute in bigger way than just as a stopper.
