Another player that in my opinion was often used in the role that doesn’t suit him so well. We are used to seeing Vide having the ball in his hands and be the cornerstone of the offense but in Slovenia he often played as secondary creator or off-ball. He managed to show his great scoring instincts and how good he is at beating the first line of the defense and finish with a floater or shot from mid-paint. He was pretty successful in those type of shots but had a little more problems with finishes at the rim against athletic and longer player. Even though he often struggled to get in the scoring rhythm, he still managed to score 17.9 points per game and be amongst the best scorers in the competition. Shooting is still not completely fluid but he made some important shots against Brazil and China and showed some clutch genes. Not the worst tournament but he is capable of more, hopefully he will show that next season at UCLA in the Pac-12.

The new UCLA commit Vide has again shown his mature all-around playmaking skills at the ANGT finals, which made him the well-deserved MVP of the whole weekend. While being the main initiator of Madrid’s offense he showed his multitude of productivity, which is hard to stop for a point guard with the help of his size. When he did act off the ball, he immediately punished closeouts with high-percentage floaters or midrange shots. Let’s keep it short: He showed no serious and obvious weaknesses offensively and defensively.

Vide made the biggest leap in development since the ANGT in Munich in finishing with contact near the basket. Besides some and-ones, he also had less problems finishing against opposing bigs. Generally, his talent has been known for some time, as comparisons to compatriot Doncic are not infrequent. He’ll make a splash in the NCAA right away next season, as his controlled style of play suits the Bruins well.

As the most experienced ANGT player of Real Madrid and former champion of the tournament, Jan Vide was in his bag in Munich. Vide averaged 17.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 1 block and got himself a place in the Best Starting Five of the tournament. He showed how efficient he can play as a team player and improvement in terms of playmaking since he is known for having issues with shot selection and decision making from time to time. Not all the problems are gone in terms of decision making and his release behind the 3-point line is still a little bit concerning but his game has obviously matured a lot (57.4% FG). Vide is still a huge threat around the rim with a beautiful floater and his pace with the ball in his hands makes him a dangerous offensive weapon in transition. His aggressiveness on the defensive end was one of the most positive signs about Vide in Munich which is promising a possible two-way player upside for the Slovenian prospect.

Jan Vide (G | 196 cm | ’05) ~ Real Madrid

I would say Jan Vide was the main player in Real’s team and had the most freedom in the team. He was their best scorer with 13.6 points per game but also took a lot of shots to get there. When he decided to attack the rim, it was really hard to stop him. His upper body was too strong for the competition and he managed to finish through contact when his shots were contested. Also used his size and strength advantage often in posting up smaller defenders and creating out of post ups. He showed advanced in-between game with some tough mid-range shots and looked more confident in his shot but still a long way to go that his shots becomes consistent and reliable. Has room to improve as passer/playmaker but, in my opinion, his ceiling will depend on how reliable as a shooter he can get and playmaking will be just an added bonus for his game.

Jan Vide (G | 197 cm | ‘05) ~ Slovenia

Top scorer of the tournament. His offensive role was really high and he was basically taking a shot in almost every Slovenian possession. Some of those shots were too forced for my taste but that was the game plan of the Slovenian team. Jan struggled a lot with his efficiency and missed a lot of contested layups at the rim and even more floaters from a few feet. He had no problems beating the first line of defense and his first step and acceleration is really elite. Also has a strong upper body and has no problem initiating contact but as said, struggled a lot with making those shots. Shooting from distance still raises some question marks and he isn’t a consistent shooter yet. Would love to see him create more for his team mates too and connect the dots in offense more often. His ceiling in my opinion will come down to his ability to knock down shots from deep and how he will be able to create opportunities for his team mates – and he was quite bad in both of those areas in this tournament. On the other hand, it is hard to say that the tournament was bad for him since he was carrying the team to a historical 7th place and finished as a top scorer in the end but he is capable of better performances. His progress needs to be followed and updated in next year(s) in Real Madrid.

Similar as Urban Klavžar also Jan Vide brought some fans to the stands in Ljubljana. Had quite an important role when coming off bench and there were a few sequences when he made important plays in defense or in offense and pushed the team forward. Jan has very good positional size and a strong body and he knows how to use it on drives or at finishes at the rim to absorb contact. His first step is really good and can get by defenders. There is still room to improve in his shooting since he isn’t a reliable shooter from distance and I also see a lot of room for growth in his playmaking. He makes the basic first level passes but lacks the creativity to connect more dots in offense. If he wants to become a complete offensive player, these two areas will need to improve in the next years. Because of his strong body and competitive nature he plays good defense on perimeter too. One of the best guards in his generation and I think his ceiling is high, especially if he makes improvements in the shooting part of his game.

Jan Vide (PG | 195 cm | ‘05) ~ Slovenia

As mentioned above, with 27.0 pts together with Kalu the first scorer of the competition but Vide played in 5 games and scored just 4 points in the last one which ruined his averages a little. Otherwise he scored 34, 28, 31 and 38 points in the first four matches! Really advanced scorer for his age with a great first step and ability to get to the rim. Has great body control and showed some balanced spins that created separation for his floaters where he showed a really soft touch. Also has an extraordinary ability to draw fouls and get to the free throw line. Takes shots from distance with confidence and I’m sure that he will be a decent shooter down the road too. More a scorer than a true playmaker but has good court vision and can spot open teammates just usually taking the matters in his own hands. With his size, great first step and ability to draw fouls he reminds me a little of Vasilije Micić.
