Recap: ANGT Finals Kaunas 2023
Hugo Gonzalez, Real Madrid (06’ – 199cm / 6.53 ft – Spain): Shooting Guard / Small Forward

Statistics: 16.5 PTS, 6.3 REB, 4.3 ASS, 3.5 TO, 1.6 BL, 58.5% 2FG, 19% 3FG, 87% FT, 2.8 STL in 32:19 MIN

The Spanish swingman was again one of the best athletes of the whole event. His defensive performance must be highlighted primarily, which was confirmed with 3.4 steals and rounded off with strong communication skills and help-side rotations, that alos lead to several highlight blocks. In addition, he had high participation in defensive rebounding.

Offensively, he was particularly conspicuous in the fastbreak. Here he used his assets skillfully and completed penetrations after close-outs with powerful finishes. Unfortunately, again no rapid increase in the three-point shot is to be recognized. Although he hit 4/10 against Belgrade, he only scored one in the following 4 games. It is important to mention that Gonzalez still belongs to the younger age group but was already one of the best players of the event. This promises a lot for the next season and upcoming ANGT events.

Recap: ANGT Munich
Hugo Gonzalez (F | 199 cm | ‘06) ~ Real Madrid [Doruk Karaca]

Hugo Gonzalez (06’) kept showing why he is considered as one of the best European prospects in the game. Displayed his offensive skillset throughout the tournament and was named the MVP in Munich. Gonzalez averaged 19.2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. His athleticism and physicality changes the pace and momentum of the games in the blink of an eye which makes him a problem. He runs the floor on and off-the ball and always stays ready for transition plays and fastbreaks. Finished well through contact, created distance from his matchups with a sweet footwork and scored the ball comfortably with both of his hands. You also can’t leave him open behind the 3-point line, Gonzalez made 11 of his 17 3-point attempts in Munich! One of the things that I found most impressive about him was his off-ball movement on half court offense, he used every step that he took wisely and for his advantage. Spanish prospect can defend for sure, he is a decent shot blocker for his position and his timing on interceptions is on point but sometimes he tends to be too offensive minded, thinking about running to offense before the job is done on the defensive end and lose concentration. On offense, one thing that didn’t stand out much was his playmaking, I wasn’t the best fan of some of his decisions but it’s not strange for his age. Overall, his future seems really really bright, big things are coming for Gonzalez.

Hugo Gonzalez (SG/SF | 199 cm | ’06) ~ Real Madrid

The MVP of the tournament. He has always found a way to score and was highly efficient through the tournament. There were shots in transitions, shots after coming off screen, isolation plays, baseline cuts, pick & rolls.. points came in many ways and this versatile scoring in combination with his confidence and aggressiveness makes him such an intriguing prospect. I’m confident that if he would play in a different team with less talent and depth that he could easily average 20+ points per game.

Hugo Gonzalez (SG | 193 cm | ‘06) ~ Spain

9.3 pts, FG2-54.8%, FG3-28.0%, FT-62.5%, 5.0 reb, 1.1 ast, 0.7 st, 1.9 to, 0.6 blck

One year younger than most of the competition but still played an important part in Spain’s success. Hugo is a versatile scorer that excels on open court. He is fluid with the ball and likes to push and attack early. Also due to his advanced body, he has no problem with getting to the rim and finishing there – under or over the rim. Maybe the numbers at this tournament don’t prove it but he is a good shooter with repeatable shooting motion and I believe he won’t have many problems making shots at a higher level. Moves well without the ball too and has great feel for cuts. His offensive/scoring game is really advanced for a player his age and has a bright future as a scoring swingman. Capable of playing good defense, his engine rarely stops and is always doing something on the court. A lot to like in Gonzalez and he is definitely one of the most talented players in his generation.
