His father Uvis Helmanis was quite successful pro player who participated in as many as 6 Eurobaskets and won national championships in Poland, Latvia and Germany. Currently he coaches youth national teams in their country. Father was big bodied prototype of stretch big and pretty much his son continues this pattern when this term in much more common. Kriss body also isn’t perfect as he has a lot of baby fat and will need to work on it a lot next years & over the course of career. At this moment he is already 6’9 and is definitely not done growing. No one will be surprised if he gaines another inch next half a year and ultimately will be even (+) 7 footer. His stroke is already very reliable. He fixed some flaws in the mechanics even though he was making shots when it was looking unorthodox. He possess phenomenal basketball IQ and passing skills for a big. As of now lacks any explosiveness and gets punished on defense by quick players badly. Anyway thanks to size, shooting, natural talent and advanced understanding of the game he is most likely Latvian next best thing. Grew up in one house with Arturs Zagars (2000 born Latvian talent from Joventut Badalona) who is like an older brother for him. |
