Yesterday Saint Mary’s got a commitment from Estonian 2018 Center Matthias Tass. He officially visited the Gaels campus last week after taking the trip to Georgia Tech. Other notable schools that were in the mix regarding his recruitment were: Stanford, Purdue, Texas Tech, St. John’s and University of Utah.
Tass was closely watched by Saint Mary’s assistant coach who was present in Tallinn for FIBA U18 European Championship. Matthias helped his country to secure promotion to Division A in his hometown while averaging 11.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
During his career Tass spent one year in Limoges, France and played three games in VTB last season. He also drawn serious interest from Zalgiris Kaunas few months ago but ultimately remained on college route.
Estonian front court player is highly skilled big man with great basketball IQ and some oldschool flavour to his game. He stands out thanks to highly advanced passing ability which allow him to share the ball from the low post with perfect angle and timing. He sets the right screens and is very smart rebounder who can tip the ball for himself and never misses box outs. Tass shows also willingness to battle for the position around the paint and plays on very good field goal percentage. He has reliable mid range jumper and he keeps making strides towards extending his stretching ability all the way to the three point line. On the other hand he is not an athletic type of player but somehow his mobility can be described as decent regarding the weight. However he will definitely have to push his limits to become reliable defender on the perimeter.
To sum up Matthias apart from being very good student is extremely well rounded player at this stage of development. He brings to the table excellent fundamentals and court vision but he possess good not great size & average athletic abilities.
