STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • 6-10 in shoes with a good wingspan (measured 7-0 at the 2017 BWB but reportedly closer to 7-3)
  • underdeveloped frame but has significant potential. 20+ pounds in the last 6 months (200 pounds now)
  • super agile for his size, long strides in transition. Impressive footwork and body coordination
  • late-bloomer physically, might have an inch or maybe even more left
  • excellent feel for the game, always knows where his teammates are
  • very effective in pick & roll or pick & pop situations. Makes plays for his teammates all over the court
  • keeps his head up when he‘s driving to the basket. Can drive and kick or dish. Very unselfish
  • good ball-handler with big swooping crossovers, which allows him to get to the rim
  • likes to utilize spin moves in games
  • shows potential as a finisher with both hands. Not afraid of contact. Uses floaters and finishes in a variety of ways
  • has some instincts on the glass combined with impressive reach. Tries to box out.
  • multipositional defender. Guards 4 different positions in the German ProB thanks to quick feet and hands. Gets a lot of steals and blocks. Size/mobility allow him to switch a lot
  • improved confidence as a shooter. Will hit an occasional 3-point shot with good ball rotation. Better mid-range shooter than a 3-point shooter. Shot is not broken at all
  • can grab and go in transition. Most effective in the open court. Draws fouls at a high rate
  • plays with a great motor and has high intangibles
  • known for being a great teammate, great on and off court demeanour
  • high ceiling as a do it all guy on the court. Can play multiple positions with his size and skills
  • not very explosive at this stage of his career. Plays more below the rim than above the rim. Lacks strength and doesn‘t have a big, well-proportioned frame
  • struggles to finish around the basket without great leaping and average strength. Has solid lateral quickness but he needs time to get himself really going
  • far away from being a consistent shooter, has a slow release. Falls back a bit when he‘s shooting. Too many moving parts in the lower body
  • not a big scorer without much of a jump shot. More a facilitator than a scorer
  • lacks a scoring mentality at this stage of his career. Could be a more aggressive bucket getter
  • free throw percentage around 70% in his career
  • turnover prone throughout his whole career. Overpasses too often
  • needs the ball in his hands to be really effective. Natural position is clearly the 1
  • seems to be a bit injury prone even though he has never had huge injuries that needed surgeries
OUTLOOK
Isaac Bonga has been one of the most highly regarded prospects in Europe from an early age on. Possessing an outstanding feel for the game and great basketball instincts to go along with good fluidity, intangibles and defensive potential, it‘s impossible to count him out as a lottery pick in 2018. Bonga, who is coming from a soccer family, will need to develop his frame, his scoring ability and finishing to reach his full potential. One year ago he was still playing with Koblenz in the Regionalliga (4th division) against weak competition, he will still need time to adapt his playing to the highest levels. His parents come fron Congo and his older brother Tarsis is a professional soccer player in Düsseldorf, Isaac Bonga‘s younger brother Joshua is playing basketball in Koblenz.
