Preview: Europeans in 2019/2020 NCAA Season
Pavel Zakharov (Gonzaga) : Gonzaga continued their trend of recruiting top level European bigman to the system with Pavel Zakharov. Russian bigman drew a lot of attention from NBA teams already with his performances in individual practices in NBA Global Camp and then attended to Montverde Academy, which is regarded as one of the top in US with a lot players found their way into the NBA later on. It will be a tough season for him as the rotation looks pretty stacked already with the likes of Filip Petrusev, still he has a great chance of playing with Oumar Ballo getting redshirted.

PAVEL ZAKHAROV (6’10, 2001, CENTER, CSKA MOSCOW) – Played on loan from Zenit Saint Petersburg. Not a discovery at all as he was at Eurocamp where they selected him as one of the few prospects for prestigious camp in LA. Possess amazing body – very strong legs and broad shoulders. Mobility and leaping ability also catch the highest standards. During the summer with Russia U16 he looked a bit robotic but here showed better court awareness and even made some nice passess. Willing to fight, has a little of footwork in the post. Moreover developable shooting stroke and excels as offensive rebounder. Likely to become good multipositional defender.

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • great size for Power Forward standing at 6’10 with plus wingspan
  • stands out with his body in age group but not really accelerator. Can still grow into his frame
  • very mobile and agile for a player his height. Can get up & down the court
  • doesn’t need much time or space to gather himself for strong finishes off two feet
  • big hands help him being good pass catcher on the move
  • makes put backs on the regular thanks to good and quick leaping ability
  • active on the court. Has feel for moving to open spots and and presenting himsef for guards around the paint
  • can ultimately become switching machine on defense. Very good lateral mobility, takes pride in contesting the shoots
  • coordinated with good hands but still not impressive non dunk finisher. Especially with off hand
  • has natural face up game upside given his motor coordination, long strides and energy but not ready to produce right now with the ball
  • shots a lot of bricks at the moment. Developing jump shot is also crucial for his further development
  • seems not to be aware of some imperfections he possess. Tries some complicated finishes after offensive boards instead of passing the ball back to the guards
  • not fundamentally sound defensively yet. Comes too close at full speed, gets lost on every close out
OUTLOOK
Saint Petersburg native is gifted with incredible athletic tools which can easily open him NBA doors next years. He was one of the best players during 2017 Adidas Eurocamp which gave him a ticket to Los Angeles for The Path training camp. Broadening offensive repertoire seems the key to reaching full potential. With improved shooting and straight line driving ability Zakharov will be a problem for opponents on both ends of the floor even on the really high level.
