Tom Digbeu (SG/SF | 198 cm | ’01) ~ ASA (France), Spain

Digbeu also struggled a lot with finding his shooting touch. He made just one of his eight attempts behind the three-point line and most of those shots were quite open and should be converted. He was active in offense, attacked with drives and sometimes created out of pick & rolls. His slashing abilities are really good and he used his athleticism well. Has versatile offensive skillset for a swingman and can fill many roles. Not the best tournament for him in the end and I expected a little more to be honest.

Tom Digbeu is back in Prienai team. Previous season was clearly a setback for French/Spanish wing because of health problems and his stock doesn’t seem great at the moment. Can we expect major comeback? I am slightly skeptical but son of long time scout and former draftee still figures in notebooks of NBA executives who will be curious to see if he built on his raw talent and whether he kept 100% of speed and bounce that he had.

Valencia #AdidasNGT: Best prospects from each team
Tom Digbeu (01’) selected to best 5, being the second-best scorer and clearly the best player in his team he managed to get 14.8pts, 5.8reb, 4ast, 1.3stl, and 4to’s. A very athletic guard, with an impressive frame, explosiveness and lift off two feet. Was regularly cutting through opposing defense off the first step or the dribble, opening a lot of opportunities for himself and his team. Reads the game well and has good instincts to deliver the ball in a flashy way to best situated teammate. His shot needs improving as he finished poorly from both FT line (55.6%) and 3-point arc (22.7%).

Valencia AdidasNGT: NBA Prospects
TOM DIGBEU  (Guard, 6’5, 2001, France/Spain, Barcelona)

It was the worst performance from Barcelona U18 team most of the scouts could remember. Tom was having a lot of responsibility as far as creating the offense for himself and others. He was trying hard and I think he presented much better & mature attitude than previous years. However despite doing the best to impact winning on both ends (he really did cover a lot of ground on D and was very engaged), he could not carry Barca to medal zone which is somewhat disappointing regarding underwhelming overall level of competition. Tom is extremely exciting backcourt prospect who great slashing game given his first step, considerable shiftiness on the fly and huge bounce either off one or two feet, standing & max. He still gets very streaky shooting wise and form is rather slow but on this level at least he doesn’t have a trouble while creating separation with short clock thanks to rangy step back. Despite that go to move his handles are rather loose and must be tighten moving forward. He showed a lot of promise of becoming secondary ball handler by facilitating really well in drive & kick situations. However some decisions are still too slow which is predictable for defenses and leads to too easy turnovers. Also operating in pick and roll is not sound yet. Anyway as an high flying, open court killer with solid length and projectable well proportioned frame which will surely bear additional bulk he remains Top 3 NBA prospects from the tournament in my eyes. Improvements mentioned above as far as polishing offensive contribution and becoming at least adequate spot up shooter are must do to think about SG career in future on the highest level possible. As of now Digbeu often dominates weak opponents and fails in important tests. His surname definitely helps to get a lot of buzz but at the end only his progress and proving himself vs strong competition next seasons can make the dream work.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • tremendous physical profile: 6‘5“ in shoes, a big frame with wide shoulders that should fill out
nicely in time. Solid length. Huge feet & a bit baby faced. Might have an inch or two left
  • excellent athlete. Quick and bouncy. Regularly throws down some highlight dunks or posters
  • great defender. Plays with a huge motor. Pressures the ball, nice timing on deflections and blocks.
Can guard 3 maybe 4 positions at the U16 level. Aggressive
  • active on the offensive glass
  • dangerous in transition when the defense is not set. Likes to get up and down. Can finish with
    either hand
  • has improved a bit as a shooter. Still streaky but can make shots. Fairly comfortable
  • high basketball IQ. Knows how to play the game. Unselfish. Likes to drive and kick
  • really skinny, especially the upper body. Can get pushed around
  • unpolished offensively, lacks strength to finish in traffic. Not unusual for his age but decision- making still has ways to go. Not a great, consistent driver despite having the athletic tools
  • needs to work on his jump shot. Low rlease point. Can airball on an open look
OUTLOOK
Tom Digbeu is one of the most exciting young prospects in Europe thanks to his athletic ability and relentless motor on the defensive end. He‘s not been playing in a professional environment for too long but he‘s already a lockdown defender and has a budding offensive skill-set. He‘s the son of former french pro Alain Digbeu who was drafted by the Hawks in the 2nd round but never played in the NBA. He did not participate in the U16 European Championship as he‘s still split between playing for France or Spain.
