Albert Schweitzer 2018 Tournament - Top European Prospects
Mattia Palumbo (G/F, Italy)

As an undersize forward, Mattia was the top rebounder of the tournament. Has a good body coordination and eager to fight for the ball with strength anytime. He shots the ball very well either from midrange or 3pt line but his stroke is mechanical and a little slow. It was impressive to see him fill up the stat sheet without drawing much attention. Plays for the team and scores when needed. He also handles the ball well but can’t say he is fast or athletic enough to create on his own against bigger opponents. Also a very good assister – made the extra passes while driving for assists. Very good understanding of the game but he will need to be more quicker in order to show his skill set on pro level. Just an OK defender for now.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • good size for a combo guard with decent strength for position
  • uses the strength to get to his spots off the dribble. Able to execute physical advantage on the low post or knock down turnaround jumper
  • very good basketball IQ. Has mature style of playing and veteran-like tricks. Also notable screener for a backcourt player
  • capable of hitting threes with his feet set. Has very long range. Shows potential as a shooter off the bounce too
  • Can come off screens. Looks for the open looks actively off the ball.
  • really good court vision. Dishes strong and patient passess with very good accuracy
  • very good ball handler with his weaker left hand. Makes effort to change gears

  • lacks quickness. Forces his way mostly with strength and good timing to change the dribble direction
  • not exceptional as a finisher. How does he get to the rim and score on the next level if there is no physical advantage?
  • average defensive effort. Gets too deep in rotation. Slow foot speed limits him on this end
OUTLOOK
Mattia is a player who possess very rare confidence level without being cocky. He walks the fine line between PG and SG position and has advanced understanding of the game. He could be a great player from competence standpoint but translation of his scoring style and ability to defend top athletes among guards may cause him troubles on the high European level.
