Albert Schweitzer 2018 Tournament - Top European Prospects
Federico Miaschi (SG, Italy)

Italian guard was an All Tournament Team member and the top scorer of the tournament with 22.9 points per game. He showed super quick jumper with high conversion rate beyond the 3pt line and from midrange. Was able to create his own shot with fakes and first step. Standing at 6’5 is not afraid of contact in any way. He made use of his wide frame and long arms. Likes to play at high tempo, excelled in transition game. Very fast and determined to get to the rim. He made the much needed extra passes on perimeter even though being a good shooter himself which is a big plus considering he was a bit selfish in the earlier tournaments this year. Quick at changing directions and has a good ball handling ability. Underrated athlete with decent vertical as well. Can get into microwave mode to score bunches in sequences throughout the game. Very active on the glasses, fought for offensive rebounds with high energy. Willing defender but needs to get his lower body stronger in order to cope with physically gifted and athletic opponents. Did not lost the ball despite a high usage rate on offense. Defensive output will be a deciding factor for his role in the pro level. Definitely a desirable player for top-tier Italian teams at this point.

Recap: Best prospects from Belgrade AdidasNGT
FEDERICO MIASCHI (2000, 6’5, GUARD, UMANA REYER) – Italian prospect was everything in Umana Reyer Venezia team. Given skills gap between him and rest, basically he was given license to kill and green light to do whatever he wants offensively. Miaschi is a player with high motor. His energy seems neverending but at some point he may run out of gas because of inability to control his own pace. His superior speed allow him to set apart each defense on youth level. He really has finishing flair and enough power to make a play through contact. Shots the ball very quick also off the dribble but gets very streaky. I don’t ever see him as scoring PG but he really understands how much space he opens thanks to driving ability and can occasionally kick the ball out. However most of the time he looks borderline selfish and is walking definition of volume scorer. Production level in this tournament is tricky considering the surrounding. It’s been first time in one and a half year when I happened to watch Miaschi. I didn’t see overwhelming changes in his playing style, skillset and physicality. Still if he adjusts for team basketball it’s easy to picture him as desirable player on Italian market among playoff teams. For example as energetic and scoring 6th man.

Evaluation 1999-2001

STRENGHTS WEAKNESSESS
  • good size for position. Increased his muscle tone nicely
  • extremely good athlete for a European player. Quickness is by the highest standards. Deadly first step and fantastic stamina
  • high motor player. Really excels in transition basketball. Attacks to the rim constantly
  • never switches off his attack mode – also without the ball. Wants the ball but incredibly active as a cutter as well
  • master of driving. Finishes in the paint at the really good percentage
  • good overall defensive effort. Contests the shoots really effectively
  • pretty solid court vision. Capable of kicking the ball out to his teammates

  • really quick release but shot is a bit flat and streaky
  • borderline selfish
  • how will he adapt to smaller offensive role on the next level? Really needs pass first type of Point Guard to play with
  • lives and dies by his intensity
  • doesn’t excel in playing defense. Average IQ on that end
OUTLOOK
Miaschi is a highly energetic player with scorer mentality who is almost unstoppable in his age group in the open court or close-out situations. He plays hard and is kind of player you wouldn’t like to guard. Native of Genua joined Reyer Venezia for 2014/2015 season and already made a debut in Top Italian Division before 17th birthday. If he is able to polish shooting skills to combine it with his fearless and relentless driving ability he can become one of the Top European shooting guards.
